AMERICAN THEATER | Ziegfeld Awards honor female musical theater composers

NEW YORK: Ziegfeld Club, Inc., one of the city’s performing arts charities dedicated to benefiting women, November announced Christine, Carmel Dean and Madeline Myers as recipients of the 2021 Billie Burke Ziegfeld Award. Presented in partnership with New York Stage and Film, the award recognizes promising female composers in musical theater. Previous winners are Masi Asare, Julianne Wick Davis, Anna K. Jacobs, Rona Sidiqqui and Shaina Taub.

“A break from past practice, we have decided this year to recognize the achievements of the three finalists in last year’s award process,” Laurie Sanderson, executive director of the Ziegfeld Club, said in a statement. “Our decision to award this year’s award to three composers reflects the immense depth of talent in the community of female songwriters and lyricists.

“We are honored to continue our partnership with the Ziegfeld Club,” Chris Burney, artistic director of New York Stage and Film, said in a statement. “The annual support of the Billie Burke Ziegfeld Award is very meaningful to the recipient. Now in its sixth year, the Billie Burke Ziegfeld Award consists of a $ 5,000 grant and one year of professional mentoring awarded to one or more emerging songwriters / lyricists who demonstrate artistic promise in musical theater composition. The Ziegfield Club also awards the Liz Swados Inspiration Grant, a $ 5,000 prize for a New York-based music educator.

November Christine produced her award-winning musical Mirror mirror at the Hollywood Fringe Festival 2015. Christine’s historic hip-hop drama, Legacy the Musical, was presented in London in 2017 and won the ‘Best of Fest’ award at the New York Musical Festival 2018. She was commissioned by Artististic Stamp Inc. to write her latest piece, Ida, a six-part epistolary on the early years of Ida B. Wells. Christine is also lyricist for the BMI Lehman Engel Musical Theater Workshop and NYCLU 2021 Artist Ambassador.

Carmel Dean is an Australian-born songwriter / lyricist, music director and arranger based in New York City. His beginnings in composition, Renaissance, was produced Off-Broadway by Transport Group and won the 2018 Off-Broadway Alliance Award for Best New Musical. His cycle of songs Wise women premiered at Joe’s Pub in January 2020 sold out. She was commissioned to write a new musical with Mindi Dickstein (Little woman) for new Provincetown / Mark Cortale work.

Madeline Myers is a composer and lyricist in New York whose musicals include Double helix, Flatbush Avenue , The devil’s apprentice, and Masterpiece. She is a 2020 Billie Burke Ziegfeld Award Finalist, 2020, 2019, 2018 and 2017 Jonathan Larson Grant Finalist, 2019 York Theater Company NEO Writer, 2020, 2019, 2018 and 2017 ASCAP Plus Award Recipient and 2016 Award Winner – Member of the Playwright’s Guild 2017.
